The new set of teamfight Tactics reaches our customers League of Legends this week. Teamfight Tactics: Fates is the fourth wave of content for the strategy game from Riot Games. We leave distant galaxies to find ourselves in magical lands!

There are always two aspects to Teamfight Tactics champions: their origin and their class. Sometimes, some will own more than one class at a time, but the rule is similar. For Teamfight Tactics: Fates, we eliminate all the origins present in Galaxies.

This is not surprising, since the origins are directly nested in the universe of expansions. An origin like Astro no longer makes sense once out of space. So, we have to make way for 13 origins, including two that return: Exile and Ninja. These two categories are back from the first set of TFT with their same mechanics. That is, a shield for Exiles and extra damage for a Lone Ninja or Quartet.

Sometimes the mechanics are similar to what we’ve seen before. For example, the new Cultist origin looks a lot like the Mech-Pilot from Galaxies. A super powerful champion comes to take control of the battlefield if you have at least three of this origin. In the case of Fates, it’s Galio who will come to your team’s rescue once their standard of living drops below 50%.

However, some are doing something completely new. This is the case of Tormented and its only champion: Kayn. The latter must participate in three fights to then transform. This is the first time that a Champion will become different without a new purchase after a few fights. Similarities are recognized with the original Warlords who will see their fighters grow stronger and stronger as they emerge victorious.

These naturally progressing power ladder mechanics (with no purchase or item) are somewhat reminiscent of the similar mode of Heartstone: Battlegrounds. Within a game of BG, your team often improves between rounds without necessarily being increased through purchases.

Familiar classes
At the Champion class level, the change is a little less drastic. Several of these extend their lives as a result of Galaxies and some are emerging. Despite dominating much of the third expansion, Vanguard and Mystic, two defensive classes, will return to line your defenses.

Although Assassin will continue to Teamfight Tactics: Fates, a new class of the same genre, titled Shade, will be there alongside him. Each of these classes begins the round by teleporting behind enemy lines. Where they diverge is what they do once there. Assassins will have more critical hits while Shade will get a bonus for every third attack during which they evaporate to return with a more powerful hit. The latter is a mixture between the fate of Zed and Shaco within Galaxies.

This emphasis on the “assassin” type is probably due to the dominance of the Sniper class for the majority of Galaxies. Riot makes sure to have a healthy ecosystem where dominant strategies can be naturally countered by another.

Then there is something completely new like Dazzler that will allow these Champions to reduce the damage of their target once via their spell. With all of these mechanics doing more than just damage, it looks like the positioning of your units will be even more important than before. This is a skill that is already essential in high-level Teamfight Tactics, but it seems to be accentuated with the new classes.

Make the good choice
In addition to this overhaul of classes and origins, Fates brings the Chosen mechanic. Each Champion has the chance to appear as Chosen in your store. A Chosen will either have its origin or its class which will count for two. So if you have a Mystic Chosen, it’s like that Champion is two Mystics. You can only have one Chosen and these will appear as 2 * and will have a bonus to their stats.

In addition to this mechanic, other origins change fundamental principles of the game. There is the example of the Warlords mentioned earlier, but the one that changes the rules the most is the Moonlight origin. The latter would allow you to have a 4 * Champion! Since Moonlight all cost a maximum of 2, you could have a Champion costing 2 to 4 *. By comparison, these champions should be less powerful than a unit costing 4 to 3 *. This means it will be a good last oomph for your early dialing, but it won’t guarantee you a win when the rounds drag on.
