The Story Of Greta
The player is invited to enter the immersive world of Greta, a little girl who lives in the shadow world of puppets, and be with her all the way as she journeys on a stirring voyage of adventure and self-discovery. On the way, as she keenly explores the cultures she encounters, she meets legendary heroes. These heroes from diverse cultures help Greta on her climb to spiritual enlightenment.
The Basic Highlights
The 2-dimensional puzzle game was developed by the Australian, Shadowplay Studios. The prototype of the Game was the Global Game Jam in 2016 by the same developers. The developers then collaborated with another Australian Indie studio called Sweatychair, and this led to the full form of the Game as we know it now. The Publishers are Blowfish Studios. The Genre is puzzle performer. The Platforms are iOS, Nintendo Swich, PC, Xbox one, and PlayStation 4.
Playing the Game
The player has control over two objects in the Game: the little shadow puppet girl Greta being one. The other is a physical ball of light. It is the ball of light that makes the shadows concrete, and allows Greta to carry on walking, in her long journey to freedom. The positioning of the light determines the length and angle of the shadows. Dialogue is all but absent. Instead, it is the characters who act out the story. There are four different time periods encountered while playing the Game. These are China, Turkey, Greece and Indonesia. In addition, there is 19th Century England. Each time period and country has its own unique culture. The environment is all shadow puppetry, as well as each character. This style replicates the traditional shadow play on canvas of the South Asian countries in reality, and creates a shadow world where all characters in the foreground are Black, while all the characters in the background are in Sepia.
The Source of Inspiration
The Head Developer Michael Chu has explained the source of the inspiration being the long hours he had spent as an imaginative and lonely child, playing with shadows on the wall. Later, as he became an artist and game developer, the early inspiration stayed, and he began experimenting with shadows on the wall. The shadows from Bradshaw became the model at first, as Richard Bradshaw opened his Puppeteers Workshop to them, and showed them how to create the shadows imaginatively. This stirred the fantasy world of Artist Yosha Noesjirwan, who had previously worked with Indonesian shadow puppets. The flights of imagination set the churn in the minds of the Developers, and they together created this poetic and uplifting game, that was at the same time, absolutely exciting.
